The Healthcare\u00a0Labour Relations Dispute Arbitration Act (HLDAA) prohibits unionized workers from\u00a0taking strike action. Healthcare employers have long used this legislation to delay, obfuscate, and ignore the legitimate\u00a0needs of workers.\u00a0Employers will often disengage from the bargaining process entirely,\u00a0opting to\u00a0wait for an interest arbitration hearing to rule on the terms of\u00a0the new agreement. These arbitration dates can take years, cost tens of thousands of dollars,\u00a0and\u00a0often\u00a0leave important issues unresolved.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CUPE is Canada\u2019s largest union, representing over 800,000 workers across the country. In Ontario, CUPE represents over 90,000 healthcare workers, including over 30,000 long-term care and retirement home\u00a0workers. The eight CUPE locals represented at the Extendicare Central table are\u00a0fighting to end long-standing issues with staffing levels, workloads, and\u00a0health and safety issues that run rampant\u00a0in every long-term care facility.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CUPE\u2019s Extendicare central bargaining table isn\u2019t just one other group of long-term care workers waiting for a contract. For the past 8 years, arbitrators, unions, and employers have looked to CUPE\u2019s Extendicare central table agreement as the precedent setting the pattern in the sector for wages. The employer, and other employers in the sector, are hoping to break this pattern. Over 1100 CUPE members represented by the eight central table locals are fighting back. We might not have the right to strike, but we can still fight for our rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Locals:<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CUPE 1182 represents\u00a0280 workers at\u00a0Extendicare\u00a0York in Sudbury.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CUPE 1307 represents 290 workers at\u00a0Crossing Bridge\u00a0in Stittsville.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CUPE 1394 represents\u00a0302\u00a0workers at Extendicare Bayview in North York<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CUPE 2770 represents\u00a0298 workers at Extendicare\u2019s Laurier Manor in Ottawa.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CUPE\u00a02951 represents 70 workers at Extendicare Tri-Town in\u00a0Temiskaming Shores.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CUPE 3127 represents\u00a0200 workers at Extendicare\u00a0in\u00a0Timmins.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CUPE 3128 represents 75 workers at\u00a0Extendicare\u00a0in\u00a0Kapuskasing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CUPE\u00a04788 represents 275 workers at Extendicare\u00a0in\u00a0Oshawa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Ontario, Health care workers are denied the right to strike.
